Here’s one of our Service User’s explaining how a Bond Guarantee helped them:
‘Like many other people I expect, I had a breakdown in my relationship with my long-term partner and ended up homeless with no money and having to rely on friends to put me up short term. With no money at all, the prospects of actually being able to secure a property that was furnished was very grim indeed as all landlords wanted deposits. I was beginning to think it was hopeless. I was informed that I qualified for a Bond Guarantee. I was given a list of approved landlords’ phone numbers that deal with the Bond board, The very same day I was informed of a flat that would be just what I needed. Within 4 days the bond was all sorted and I received my keys to the flat and moved in that very day. I have made the flat my own now and I’m very settled. There are things in life that happen that we can’t control and in all truth I know without the help I was given from the Bond Board God only knows where I would have been today. I feel better about the future now and with my own place I’m now in a position now to be able to better myself and I fully intend to do so. I owe a lot to the Bond Board their help, it was way more than I ever thought was possible for a person in my situation and the help I was given freely was way more than just a Bond. If you need more support once you’re housed or need help to find somewhere to live, drop-in to our Quids In coffee mornings where you can have a brew (or two!), meet people who can help you with your finances and much more. You can even get freebies, such as food parcels and low energy saving equipment.
Contact us if something changes or goes wrong after you’ve moved in. We are here to support you throughout your tenancy. We have workers in both offices that can give you advice and even get in-touch with your landlord for you if you are having problems.
There are nearly 600 households living in private rented properties with a Bond Guarantee from The Bond Board.
A Bond Guarantee is a written contract which is signed by The Bond Board, the tenant and the landlord, before you move into a private rented property. The contract promises that the Bond Board will pay the landlord up to a certain amount when you leave the tenancy if there is damage, rent arrears of theft from the property.
The Bond Board works with local landlords and Letting Agents to encourage them accept a Bond Guarantee from The Bond Board instead of asking you to pay a cash bond yourself. If we are able to offer you a Bond Guarantee, we can give you the contact details of landlords and agents who might accept a Bond Guarantee. You can apply for a Bond Guarantee if you are:
If you have children or you are pregnant- You will need to go to Rochdale Boroughwide Housing’s Homelessness Team, based at: St Alban’s House, Drake Street, Rochdale, OL16 1UQ first of all. Their opening hours are: 9.30am – 3pm Monday, Tuesday and Fridays, 1pm-3pm on Wednesday and Thursdays. Phone them on 0300 303 8548. Out of hours: 0300 303 8875 Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
They will discuss all your circumstances with you and go through your housing options. They may be able to provide you with temporary accommodation if you need it. Your homeless Officer will consider whether The Bond Board is an option for you and if so, they will send us your details. We will then arrange for you to complete an application form (we can help you with this if you need it) and meet with us as soon as possible to discuss your situation further.
If you don’t have children living with you and are single, sharers or a couple- You will need a referral (information about you and your circumstances) sent to The Bond Board by someone who works with you. Examples of who could send this include, the homelessness department, a GP or healthcare worker, a support worker, a drug and alcohol service, MIND, Probation, a Social Worker, Petrus and Middleton Day Centres and many more. If you haven’t got anyone working with you and are homeless, give us a ring or call into the office and we will help you to find the most appropriate organisation to discuss a referral with you. Once we have received a referral for you, we will arrange for you to complete an application form (we can help you with this if you need it)
You can access our scheme through our weekly drop-ins which are held at Housing Advice Services on a Thursday between 10am-12.30pm and 1.30pm-4pm. They are located at the One Stop Shop, Ground Floor in Bolton Town Hall. Our service is for single people, couples and families with resident children and meets the criteria above.
We will discuss your circumstances with you and go through your housing options. If it is agreed the bond is the best option for you, we will ask you to complete an application form.

We will meet with you to discuss your situation and your application for a Bond Guarantee. The majority of people who meet the above 3 criteria and apply for a Bond Guarantee get accepted. We can usually give you a decision straight away, but sometimes we need your permission to get further information first. Once you have been accepted for a Bond Guarantee, you can usually start looking for properties immediately.
If we feel you are not ready or able to manage a tenancy and need more support than there is available, we might not be able to offer you a Bond Guarantee straight away. If this is our decision, it doesn’t mean we can’t help you at all. We will help you to get the right support or housing for you and you can still use other Bond Board services. We will let you know when you can apply again and encourage you to do so when you are ready.
